DESCRIPTION:Brief background\nThe 4th High-Pressure Single-Crystal X-Ray D
iffraction Summer School will take place at the University of Edinburgh (E
dinburgh\, Scotland) from Monday 6 July to Friday 10 July 2026 inclusive.
This five-day long School aims at providing an introduction to a novel met
hod of single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) structure studies at extre
me pressures generated in a diamond anvil cell to early career stage scien
tists (master and PhD students\, post-docs) and established scientists wor
king in the field of high pressure research.\nThe recent methodological ad
vancements in high-pressure SCXRD drastically extends its applications\, p
reviously mostly limited to ~20 GPa and large single crystals\, now reachi
ng hundreds of GPa and temperatures of thousands of degrees on submicron-s
ized polycrystalline aggregates. An overview of the necessary fundamental
theoretical and methodological principals\, including diamond anvil cell p
reparation\, strategy of experiments\, laser-heating\, introduction to sof
tware and SCXRD\, will be covered through lectures accompanied by demonstr
ations\, hands-on sessions\, and step-by-step tutorials. At the end of the
School\, participants are expected to be able to perform basic high press
ure SCXRD experiments\, as well as data processing and interpretation.\nTh
e School is building on the huge success of the three previous iterations
(see Previous Workshops).\n \nDetails of the School\nThe School will be h
eld in the James Clerk Maxwell Building of the University of Edinburgh’s
King’s Buildings campus. The School aims at welcoming 35 participants.
\nAll participants are expected to bring and present a poster on their r
esearch topic. \nPlease make sure to bring your own computer/laptop\, sin
ce there are no computers in any of the rooms for this summer school. More
over\, for the softwares to work correctly\, it is very strongly encourage
 d to use a Windows operating system.\nOnce a participant application has b
een accepted\, they will be asked to pay the registration fee. The fee\, w
hich includes accommodation and meals for the length of the School\, will
be 525 GBP for residential and 200 GBP for non-residential (does not inclu
de accommodation). This is thanks to our generous sponsors\, namely DAC To
ols\, Rigaku\, Almax easyLab and SUSSP.\nAccommodation will be covered fro
m Sunday 5 July to Friday 10 July (5 nights). If you require an additional
night on Friday 10 July the cost will be 77 GBP.\nThe full details on the
School's covered topics can be found here.\nIUCr Young Scientist Award\nA
n IUCr Young Scientist Award (£290) will be given to five Young Scientist
s\, covering part of the travel/accommodation expenses \n\nYoung Scientis
ts are graduate students\, post-graduate students or post-doctoral fellows
within five (5) years of receiving a graduate degree. Academic interrupt
ions\, including periods of parental leave\, are taken into account.\nPref
erence will be given to those early-career scientists who have published i
n IUCr journals and to early-career scientists from developing countries\,
particularly\, but not limited to\, from Latin America\, Africa and South
East Asia.\nPlease see here for the IUCr statement on gender balance and
here for the IUCr code of conduct.\n\n \nApplications for Summer School\n
The application deadline is 30 April 2026. All applications will be review
ed and a final decision on acceptance will be made by 7 May 2026. If your
application is successful you will be required to pay the registration fee
  by 22 May 2026.\nImportant Dates\n\nApplication deadline: 30.04.2026\nAcc
eptance decision: 07.05.2026\nRegistration fee payment deadline: 22.05.202
 6\nArrivals: 05.07.2026\nSchool dates: 06.07.2026-10.07.2026\n\nShould you
have any questions\, please contact sopa.events@ed.ac.uk \nPlease be awa
re of this Travel Scam! \nIf you received emails from travellerpoint(dot)
org (or another travel company)\, please be careful. The email asks about
arrival and departure dates to Edinburgh and offers a hotel booking form w
here they ask for credit card details.Please\, ignore the emails and do no
t reply nor click on any link given by them. You can also block the domain
