The 8th edition of the Higgs Centre School of Theoretical Physics will take place from 22-26 May 2023. The scientific programme starts at 9:00 on Monday 22nd, and ends at 17:30 on Friday 26th.

This year's edition of the HC School focuses on aspects of radiative corrections, and is held in the week preceding the 16th edition of the international RADCOR conference, which will take place in Crieff, Scotland.

The School comprises two in-depth lecture series, each involving five 2-hours lectures delivered on the blackboard, and a similar number of tutorials.

For this year's School our two lecturers will be Sebastian Mizera (Institute for Advanced Studies, Princeton) and Robert Szafron (Brookhaven National Laboratory).

Sebastian Mizera (Institute of Advanced Study, Princeton) - Physics of the Analytic S-Matrix

You might've heard about various mathematical properties of scattering amplitudes such as analyticity, sheets, branch cuts, discontinuities, etc. What does it all mean? In these lectures, we'll take a guided tour through simple scattering problems that will allow us to directly trace such properties back to physics. We'll learn how different analytic features of the S-matrix are really consequences of causality, locality of interactions, unitary propagation, and so on.

Robert Szafron (Brookhaven National Laboratory) - Effective field theories for precision computations

Quantum corrections for multi-scale problems pose many technical challenges. The effective field theory approach untangles the complexity of a problem by separating the degrees of freedom relevant at disparate scales enabling us to tackle the contributions pertinent at each of the various scales independently. Effective field theories are also helpful in the study of the all-order structure of the quantum corrections using resummation techniques, and facilitate systematically improvable predictions through an expansion in the scale ratios. My lecture series will provide a pedagogical introduction to modern effective field theories and present their relevance for high-precision calculations in particle physics. I will focus on the theories that describe non-relativistic physics (NREFT) and the physics of soft and collinear radiation (SCET) which, surprisingly, share many similarities. I will describe matching procedures and discuss selected concrete applications of the effective field theory framework to phenomenology.

Information for delegates: This is an in-person event only and the fee to attend is £50. A funding subsidy towards the cost of accommodation (£200) will be available to the first 25 people who register and attend the event.
